I had a job interview today. Just for a general medical officer job...not for any training purposes or anything.
It took nearly an hour to drive there in the pouring rain. The parking was terrible and I had to walk quite a bit in the rain. The hospital was sooooo small, even smaller than my previous hospital. I hadn't even gone in yet and I already knew that I would definitely NOT be working in this hospital. I didn't leave my old hospital gladly to go to yet another smaller hospital. I'd never be able to escape!
The director of medical services said he can offer me part time ED and I could start whenever I want. Or full time in General Medicine starting in June.
If I have a choice, I never want to work in Emergency again. I've done three ED terms (that's nearly 8 months worth of just Emergency Medicine)...yuck!! I hate it. Plus, since it's a small hospital there is a high likelihood that most of the patients that you'll see there will have to be referred and transferred to a bigger hospital and that job is the part I HATE the most. The part time option sounds good but it won't be economy of scale at all if I have to get a babysitter if I'm only working 2 days a week.
The next option is to apply to bigger hospitals. If accepted, I would definitely have to start mid year. But at least it's only 10-15 minutes from where we live. Now on to the convoluted process of applying for a place at these hospitals. So many requirements!
